Voice to text for Windows, in any app

Hold Right Control, talk, and let go. Vurb types your words wherever the cursor is on Windows 10 or 11. The speech model runs on your PC, so your voice stays private and dictation works offline.

Dictation software that works where you type

Vurb runs in the background. Click into any text box — email, chat, a document, a browser, a code editor, a form — and hold your dictation key. A slim pill shows at the bottom of the screen while it's listening. Release the key and the text is typed at your cursor.

The default key on Windows is Right Control. You can change it to Left Control, Left or Right Alt, the right Windows key, or Right Shift. Double-tap for hands-free dictation and tap again to stop; press Esc to cancel a recording before it's typed.

Whisper speech to text, running on your PC

Vurb uses OpenAI's open-source Whisper model through whisper.cpp. On Windows it starts with the Balanced model (190 MB), a good trade-off between speed and accuracy on most PCs. If transcription feels slow, switch to Fast or Fastest (English only); if your PC is quick, try Best (574 MB).

All models except Fastest understand 90+ languages and detect the language automatically, so you can dictate in English one minute and Spanish the next. Add names and jargon to custom vocabulary so they're spelled the way you spell them.

Installing on Windows

  1. Download the Windows installer from the download page. You need Windows 10 or 11, x64.
  2. Run it. If you see “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway. The beta isn't code-signed yet.
  3. Allow microphone access if Windows asks, or turn it on under Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
  4. Wait for the speech model to download the first time. After that, dictation works without an internet connection.
  5. Hold Right Control and talk.

What stays on your PC

Audio is transcribed locally and discarded. Transcripts, history and stats are stored in Vurb's folder on your computer. If you turn on optional AI cleanup, only the transcribed text is sent to Anthropic with your own API key. See how your data moves.

Questions about voice to text on Windows

Which versions of Windows are supported?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 on x64 PCs.

Which key starts dictation on Windows?

Right Control by default. You can choose Left Control, Left or Right Alt, the right Windows key, or Right Shift instead.

Windows says it protected my PC. Is that expected?

Yes, for now. The beta installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen warns you. Click More info, then Run anyway — only for files from vurb.me or our GitHub Releases page.

Is my voice sent to the cloud?

No. Speech to text runs on your PC with a local Whisper model. Your audio never leaves your computer.
