Dictation app FAQ
Short answers. If yours isn't here, email hello@vurb.me.
General
What is Vurb?
A dictation app. Hold a key, talk, let go, and what you said is typed wherever your cursor is.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app with a text cursor. It types into whatever has focus.
Which operating systems?
macOS 13+, Windows 10/11 (x64) and Linux (x64, X11). See Download.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the speech model is downloaded, dictation doesn't need the internet. AI cleanup, if you turn it on, does.
Privacy
Does my audio leave my computer?
No. It's transcribed on your computer and discarded.
Where are my transcripts stored?
Only on your computer, in the app's data folder. You can clear your history in the app.
What does AI cleanup send?
Only the transcribed text and your custom vocabulary, directly to Anthropic with your own API key. Never audio. It's off by default.
Do you use analytics?
Not on this site, and the app doesn't send us your dictations or stats. Details on the security page.
Languages
Which languages are supported?
90+, through Whisper. The language is detected automatically.
Can I mix languages?
Yes. Switching between English and Spanish, for example, works without changing settings. Use a multilingual model (Fast, Balanced or Best), not Fastest, which is English only.
Does it translate?
No. It types what you said in the language you said it. AI cleanup never translates either.
Pricing and billing
Is the free plan really free?
Yes. 2,000 words a week, no card, no account.
What does Pro add?
Unlimited words, up to 3 computers, priority support and early access. Built-in AI cleanup is coming soon.
Can I get a refund?
Pro and Growth have a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Who processes payments?
Lemon Squeezy, as merchant of record.
Teams
Do you have team plans?
Growth (per seat, 3-seat minimum, one invoice) and Enterprise (custom). See Business.
Can you go through our security review?
Yes, on Enterprise, along with DPA support. We don't hold SOC 2 or similar certifications.
Do you support SSO or MDM?
Not yet. Both are on the roadmap.
Troubleshooting
Nothing gets typed.
On a Mac, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure Vurb is on. If it's on and still not working, turn it off and on again. Without this permission the text is copied to your clipboard instead.
It doesn't hear me.
Check that Vurb is allowed to use the microphone in your OS privacy settings, and that the right input device is selected.
The key doesn't work on Linux.
Vurb needs an X11 session. Wayland isn't supported yet.
